Pay it Forward Friday: Travelers Against Plastic
Water is all around us. It makes up 60% of our body. It is the most common substance on earth. There is a national holiday dedicated to it! Americans spend more than $50 billion annually on bottled water and discard more than 3.4 billion plastic bottles. Those are some pretty harrowing numbers. Is there anything we can do to get those numbers down?
Luckily there is. Todays Pay it Forward Friday post is dedicated to TAP: Travelers Against Plastic. On March 22nd (World Water Day) a Seattle based non-profit launched a world-wide initiative called TAP. The concept is simple ~ reduce your plastic consumption and make the pledge to become a responsible traveler.
With summer tourism reaching its peak, co-founder Chris Mackay is “asking travelers to end the trail of plastic waste by investing in re-usable water bottles and treating your water.” Well, I have a Brita at home but certainly wasn’t thinking of packing it … I use tumblers at work but would never touch their tapwater…so what are my alternatives?
Klean Kanteens & Steripens
Klean Kanteen: Made from high-quality stainless steel. No harmful chemicals or toxins
SteriPen: A product that uses UV light technology to purify water. Destroys more than 99.9 percent of bacteria.
So before you go and buy the bulky case of water, try and think about where each of those water bottles will end up. Then think about the efficiency of a re-usable water bottle. I bet if you can get 10 friends to buy a Klean Kanteen, they’ll go tell 10 more friends, who will go and tell 10 more. Ah, the beauty of Paying it Forward!
