Battery Wharf Hotel With a View

The recently rebranded Battery Wharf Hotel occupies prime real-estate along Boston’s harbor. One hundred and fifty stylishly designed guest rooms and suites are divided amongst buildings giving water views to guests from all directions. For a luxury stay in Boston with a landscape featuring water, boats and planes, this is a location that’s hard to beat.

History

The historic site has seen many events during both the American Revolution and Civil Wars. In the 1640’s, this setting was home to the North Battery, housing a strategic shoreline artillery unit for protection against sea attack from England’s enemies. The area was rebuilt of stone 100 years later and famously recorded shortly thereafter in an engraving by Paul Revere. (below) After the revolutionary war, the defensive site was no longer needed and the wharf went through many incarnations until it took the unusual trapezoidal shape that stayed present throughout the 1900’s.

Immigrants arrived from afar to the bottom of Hanover Street and cotton was imported and housed in the many warehouses along the strip of property. The port’s cargoes of molasses and sugar cane from the south was made into candy and alcohol in  nearby factories.  During the last half-century, the wharf was home to Bay State Lobster Co., the Coast Guard station, and the Boston fire boat dock at Burroughs Wharf. Currently, in addition to the Battery Wharf Hotel complex, the Maritime Museum brings together all the pieces of the wharf’s unique 350 year history.

Location

The boutique hotel is pleasantly secluded and directly on the edge of Boston Harbor. Away from the hustle and bustle of the South Boston waterfront, visitors will still see the same killer views of Boston Harbor; the location couldn’t be better. Sited at the bottom of Battery street, and buffered  by two related buildings housing business level rooms and EXHALE spa and gym,  guests are assured a quiet stay almost unheard of in Boston. Next door, sits the Coast Guard station and the aforementioned Maritime Museum. The North End and all its great restaurants are a short walk away. Outside, the connecting 39 miles of pedestrian friendly HarbourWalk are an excellent place to stroll or jog along the waterfront. The Boston Greenway, Faneuil Hall, TD Garden and the Aquarium are all walking distance.  A water taxi from the airport can drop you at the entrance, so you could easily fly into Boston and never miss a car during your stay.

The Room

Many of the hotel rooms have dramatic views of the waterfront. Boats travel by the windows all day long. The end rooms hang over the water and give the feel of floating on a boat. With it’s pale, grey green walls accented with dark wood and neutral accessories and decor, the room has a very calming, relaxed feeling. Luggage racks made unpacking a breeze.  Luxurious bedding and chocolates greeted us in the evening. Everything was quite comfortable and roomy with a lounge chair in the corner to take full advantage of the water views.

The Bathroom

White walls give a spa like quality to the bathroom. Double sinks, plenty of fluffy white towels, robes and the luxury brand Antica Farmacista bath products are featured. Being a citrus aficionado, I was particularly pleased by the hotel’s choice of the Pompelo scent, a most heavenly, clean and invigorating grapefruit fragrance. A rain shower and hand held fixture made using the products that much more enjoyable. The toilet was housed in a separate enclosure. One of the more creative touches was a back entrance to the closet in the bathroom, so you could access your clothes without leaving the room. I’d never seen that before and thought it a clever design element.

Amenities

Voted best Day Spa in Boston, Exhale  is one of the luxury amenities at the hotel with additional workout rooms, yoga room and Barre classes. After a day of walking and exploring the city, it’s great to have an on site spa to soothe sore muscles and relax. There is also yoga on the harbor during the warmer weather. The hotel has valet parking, is pet friendly and has wireless internet (for a charge-GRRR…) and 24 hr. in room dining.

Dining

Boston’s much loved North End and New England recipes have influenced the food on  Aragosta Bar+Bistro’s contemporary menu. Cozy, with spectacular views, this waterfront eatery serves hand-made pastas, New England-sourced seafood and local organic ingredients. Summertime, their outdoor fire pits have to be one of the best seats in town.  Lobster Bakes and s’mores are a guest favorite.

Enjoy a seasonally inspired Afternoon Tea menu in the Battery Lounge. Featuring two seatings (2 pm and 4 pm) on weekends, this elegant mid-day respite overlooking Boston Harbor includes traditional, fruit and herbal teas and afternoon aperitifs paired with classic tea sandwiches, lemon tarts, fresh baked scones and dark chocolate truffles. It’s the perfect way to recharge before the evening ahead.

Live jazz and the spicy Cilantro Sting cocktail make the Battery Lounge one of the neighborhood’s liveliest spots for socializing. Located in the lobby, this warm, welcoming space features floor to ceiling views of the water. Many residents from the surrounding area take advantage of this friendly location giving it a local vibe.
