Travelling with Martyn Lawrence-Bullard

Travel Thursday-Today I went on a bit of a stay-cation to The Boston Design Center’s DesignBoston 2011 event and heard the infamous Martyn Lawrence-Bullard speak about his collaboration with Schumacher fabrics.  You might recognize him as one of the designers on Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Decorator, and he is definitely the design darling of the Hollywood set with a clientele that reads like a Who’s Who of the entertainment industry.  Joining him was Susan North, SVP of Design at Schumacher, who was able to explain the journey taken from concept to finished product, and give us insight into the landscape of a licensed collection.

Martyn’s biggest influence on his design aesthetic is travel {thus ending up on Travel Thursday}  and he took us on a quick trip to Istanbul, an area where Islamic, Greek, Roman and Russian cultures co-exist to form a wonderful exotic locale.  He has interpreted his favorite antique textiles with a modern design twist and ramped up color palate. Joining forces with Schumacher’s history, expertise and connections, the combination  provided the perfect pairing to manufacture an exquisite grouping of fresh, modern fabrics with an old world feel that really emphasize the artisanal nature of each part of the collection.

True to form, Martyn did dish on Cher, travel and his serendipitous career path.  I must say he was much more delicious in person!  Thank-you to moderator Christopher Muther of the Boston Globe, Martin, and Susan for an entertaining and insightful morning. Thanks Megan for sharing your photos.
