History

For 75 years the Hotel Aigua Blava has been a jewel in the crown of the Costa Brava coastline. Perched on the hillside and founded by Clara Capellà in 1934, it was then called “la Clareta”. Capellà’s son-in-law was the inspiration for converting Clareta Hostal into the Aigua Blava Hotel. Since then, the entire family has joined in the keeping the spirit of “la Clareta” alive in Hotel Aigua Blava, a classic four-star property. The hotel has always been proud to be “home away from home” for countless visitors who return year after year, and is now managed by the fourth generation the Capellà family.

Location

Offering modern, comfortable accommodations surrounded by lush, breathtaking views, the area has eight coves and beaches with sparkling crystal water where you can sunbathe, kayak or snorkel. The Aigua Blava beach is one of the most famous on the Costa Brava. While miles of coastline and the sparkling sea are a major draw, there are many other reasons to visit this spectacular part of Spain. The area is known for its quality of art with several museums, including the Dali Museum in Figures, approximately an hour away. Visit the medieval villages of Peratallada and Moneys, Greek and Roman ruins, pottery, castles and more. Music festivals and wine tours offer more cultural exposure to the area.

Botanical Gardens in the surrounding area

For nature lovers, the Costa Brava has beautiful gardens, mountains, forest, volcanoes and three protected National Parks. You can play a round of golf, windsurf or waterski or play tennis on the hotel’s court. Hike the coastal paths (camins de ronda) through various coves with panoramic views of the cliffs and coastline. One of these paths will take you from Begur to Calella de Palafrugell, one of the loveliest villages with a beautiful beach and excellent seafood restaurants.

My host for this press trip was Costa Brava Tourism, but as always, opinions are my own.

  1. You are giving us serious wanderlust for visiting the Costa Brava area of Spain! We have two sets of friends who’ve explored the region recently — and raved about it. Begur, in particular, we hear is a pretty little seaside town. Looks like Hotel Aigua Blava is a lovely place to stay :-).

  2. My sister and I stayed here for 5 nights a couple years ago and loved the location! The pool was delightful and the path down to the sea was too. Our food experience wasn’t as good as yours so they must have gotten a new chef in the intervening years which is a good thing!

    • alison says:

My stay was way too short Kay,I didn’t even get in the lovely pool. The food was terrific, they served this desert that was a riff on a soft boiled egg-pale pink white chocolate filled with a center of buttery cream. As you can tell, i’m still tasting it!

  3. Janice Chung says:

The last picture of the pool and patio is gorgeous. I think I missed out on a lot of Costa Brava when I attended TBEX….just into Spain and then back to France. What I like about this place (besides the delicious looking food) is that is overlooks the sea. The views are gorgeous.

    • alison says:

I’m sorry we didn’t get the chance to meet there Janice and yes one of the best parts was the post TBEX trips. They really pulled out all the stops. On all the trips everyone had glowing reports.

  4. Pete and I love Begur! Part of the reason is the Hotel Aigua Blava (where he stayed on the same trip with you). If I had to live anywhere full time, Begur would be atop my list.

    • alison says:

I love’d spending time with Pete in that trip. He’s so thoughtful Betsy! Costa Brava is a spot I would love to return to with my husband! So romantic.

  5. Donna Janke says:

Hotel Aigua Blava looks like a great place to stay in what is a great location. Definitely a room with a view!

  6. Susan Moore says:

When I visited Costa Brava I loved going for long walks along the coastline – such stunning views! Hotel Aigua Blava would be a beautiful place to stay on my next trip to the region. I would enjoy exploring Begur and swimming some laps in the salt water pool – looks wonderful!

    • alison says:

That coastline was pretty spectacular wasn’t it Susan!? I was thrilled to learn that you can actually take the coastal trail from hotel to hotel and there is a service that will bring your bags. I’d love to try that in the future.
